Why is this piece your Trace Fossil?
“Axis Mundi is my trace fossil because it captures the intersection of art, faith, and architecture that defines my creative identity. In studying the Dome of the Rock, I was drawn to its symmetry and sacred geometry --- the way structure can embody belief. The work reflects my fascination with spaces that hold meaning beyond their physical form, and how a space can represent ideas and beliefs larger than ourselves. It leaves an imprint of who I am because it reveals how I see the world: through structure, symbolism, and the pursuit of unity within design.”
Josie Meloeny is a senior visual arts major at Charleston County School of the Arts and a recipient of the Scholastic Art Awards. Through her exploration of texture and material, her work bridges fine art and architectural thinking as she prepares to pursue a career in architecture and design.
